How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Date for Your Venue in Virginia

Choosing your wedding date is one of the most exciting and strategic steps in planning your celebration. In Virginia, your date impacts everything: the weather, your guest experience, your photos, and even the availability of your dream vendors.

Here’s how to choose the perfect date to match your vision.

Seasons

First, you’re going to want to think about the weather and how that will affect you, your guests, and vendor availability. Spring (March-May) is gorgeous and when the greenery is fresh, temperatures are mild. This weather is great for a soft palette of colors. These weddings can be gorgeous. One thing you do need to look out for is the occasional rain showers. If you’re getting married in Spring, you need to choose a venue that can accommodate your guests both inside and out.

Luckily, at New Field Farm, every guest is given a rain plan. We can comfortably seat up to 200 guests for meals, dancing, and the ceremony and perform your entire wedding indoors if the weather goes south, with no need for you to stress.

Summer weddings (June-August) have the most daylight, perfect for golden-hour photos on the Blue Ridge Mountains, obviously it’s also warm, making it the perfect occasion for outdoor receptions on our patio, and perfect for outdoor ceremonies. Your guests will love the ambiance of Summer for a more casual, laid back, and lively ceremony.

Autumn weddings are by far the most popular in Lexington, Virginia. The foliage becomes all kinds of reds and oranges and the views are breathtaking. At New Field Farm, we have gorgeous views which you can see for miles in every direction. Our couples do both indoor and outdoor weddings in the fall, because the weather is so delightful. The go-to is to do the ceremony and photos outdoors while the sun is up, and then dinner and dancing indoors once the sun goes down. It makes for a perfect atmosphere which doesn’t get stale by sitting in the same place for too long.

Winter weddings are by far the cheapest. At New Field, we offer discounts for the months of December-February, and it’s perfect for candlelit and intimate ceremonies. Your guests will be cozy in our barn, and our on-site suites with top notch heating and views of white snow which stretch for miles.

PRO-TIP: If possible, schedule a tour around the same season and time you’re considering. Seeing how the sun hits the fields or the barns at that time of year can help you visualize your day precisely.

Meaningful Dates

Even more important than the weather, is that your wedding date is meaningful to you. Most couples choose their “date-aversary,” a birthday, or a holiday when family comes together naturally. Just remember: holiday weekends can increase travel costs.

Vendor Availability

Popular Virginia photographers, caterers, and planners book 12–18 months out — especially for September and October. If you’re set on a specific vendor, your date should match their calendar.
