Welcome to the story behind the restoration of New Field Farm at Timber Ridge—an inspiring transformation of a historic property into an elegant wedding venue nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
A Piece of History
From the very start, the property was special: located on the National Register of Historic Places, the land boasts sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and has a long legacy of farming and rural life.
In its earlier life,
it was known as the “Briar Patch,” with meadows and wildflowers covering the land. The prior owners, the Kinnear family, used the land for farming—raising cattle and chickens, and working the fields. In fact, when New Field Farm’s team arrived, animals were still roaming near the barn.
To maintain the tradition, the barn was constructed in part with material from an original log cabin and built with wood from the property.
The Vision & The Journey
When our current owners arrived in 2020, they saw incredible potential: the vistas were gorgeous, but the buildings were in serious need of restoration. Their vision? To maintain the rustic soul and historic roots of the property while building a venue that could serve today’s couples—beautiful, functional, and full of character.
They undertook a full renovation of the barn and supporting structures:
The original barn structure remains at the core, encased within newer construction, so you can still see the dark wood of the old beams alongside the lighter new timber.
They preserved the original siding and repurposed it: you’ll find the old boards framing doors and windows inside the barn.
Many of the original farming tools and artifacts were found and hung up through the barn interior, adding authentic charm.
New extensions were added to increase capacity and provide modern amenities—without erasing the rustic aesthetic.
The time that it took to complete the barn construction really depends on who you ask. If you ask Brett, he would say, "About two years, but with planning four." If you ask another member of the family, like Autumn, she would say, "Six, but still working on it." Autumn was in charge of making the final design and color options for the main level and the rooms on the lower level.
Inside the Barn: Details That Matter
Walking through the barn now, you’ll notice the contrast between the original structure and the new workmanship: the dark patina of the old wood, the new flooring laid over original planks, the large windows that bring in natural light and mountain views, and the modern supports added to ensure this place will last another hundred years.
One of my favourite details: a roll-away barn door made from an old door found on site. It’s a subtle nod to the past embedded in the present.
The design intentionally allows the landscape to be part of the experience: big windows, exposed beams, and natural lighting all draw your eye out to the meadow, the ridge, the sky. The renovation wasn’t just about building a venue—it was about preserving a place.
